Ramadan is just about a week away now! I’m so excited. I myself often have so many worldly attachments and worries. Ramadan is often my chance to take a break from those attachments, and get myself reoriented to focus on more spiritual matters.
Yet, I’ve also noticed how easy it is for Ramadan to become “THE MONTH OF FOOD!” The focus can shift to planning elaborate suhoors (morning meals) and iftars (evening meals), and indulging in special dishes. While there’s nothing wrong with food (I know I love it), it’s good to remind ourselves that the real purpose of fasting is to strengthen our willpower and deepen our connection to God. It’s about more than just abstaining from food and drink; it’s about training the soul.
It’s also important to acknowledge that not everyone can fast. Some people have health issues that make fasting very difficult, risky, if not impossible.
Another thing I also wanted to acknowledge, is that not everyone has close Muslim family or loved ones that they can share this spiritual month with. Converts can find the month lonely, waking up for Suhoor by themselves. Fasting alone while smelling the delicious hamburgers their coworkers are eating.
So I wanted to highlight ten intentions to set for improving our God Consciousness during this most holy of months that isn’t just connected to fasting or food.
