I just wanted to take a moment to highlight the work of this amazing organization.
The Tayba Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving individuals and families impacted by incarceration. They believe in the power of human change through holistic education, guidance, and support.
They have served 1000+ prisons, 15,000+ student prisoners, and all 50 U.S. states.
Muslim prisoners in the U.S. often lack access to spiritual guidance, teachers, community, and educational resources—particularly those imprisoned in rural areas. The Tayba Foundation is the only Islamic curriculum in the country designed specifically for prisoners.
When the founder, Rami Nsour, was interviewed about the impact of the organization (and Islam in general) on prisoners, he said it often helped prisoners become less violent, helped with their transition to the outside world, and helped lowed recidivism rates.
Many Muslims in prison interviewed have said they felt completely alone, isolated, and abandoned by their communities until Tayba stepped in to help. Often Tayba was the only organization that would reply to their letters. Receiving workbooks and hopeful letters from Tayba gave them hope for reform in the future.
The Quran states the following: “And they give food out of love for Him to the poor and the orphan and the captive (76:8).” Captives, or prisoners, should be part of our advocacy efforts.
